1. I think that Mr. Hooper wears the black veil to repress his emotions. He wears the veil as a symbol of hidden sin. He says that he must wear the veil so it seems that he does not have a choice, that some superior being is forcing him to wear it: "'There is an hour to come' said he, 'when all of us shall cast aside our veils. Take it not amiss, beloved friend, if I wear this piece of crape till then." The veil represents how man has problems showing his sin and tries to hide it behind a figuritve black veil. He also says: "'If I hide my face for sorrow, there is cause enough,' he merely replied; 'and if I cover it for secret sin, what mortal might not do the same?'" He is confused about why people are so concerned with his veil when they are wear a spiritual veil
2. "For the Earth, too, had on her Black Veil." I think that the earths black veil simbolizes how the whole world has its own sins that it wants to hide. This is just how Mr. Hooper tries to hide his sins behind the black veil, so the earth wearing a black veil represents the same thing. All people of the Earth have sins to hide and its casts a huge veil over the whole world
3. I think that everyone is drawn to the dread of the veil because they themselves share the same dread. In the story it says: "He became a man of awful power over souls that were in agony for sin. His converts always regarded him with a dread peculiar to themselves, affirming, though but figuritively, that, before he brought them to celestial light, they had been with him behind the veil." These converts connect with Mr. Hooper's dread and sin because they themselves were once under an imaginary veil. They are in debt to Mr. Hooper as he lead to the celestial light and the right path.
1.The black veil brings out the fear in the townspeople, therefore it is the protagonist. It darkens Mr. Hooper’s perception of the world, and when he wears it he shows that even ministers can sin. The black veil represents hidden and forbidden sin, which the townspeople do not want to think about because they never want their sins to be revealed. "'There is an hour to come' said he, 'when all of us shall cast aside our veils.” This is saying that on judgment day, you cannot hide your sins
2. The black veil covers sins yet it shows the world that there is something to hide. I think by the Earth having a black veil means that even the Earth has something to hide. I think the sins that the Earth has are the sins of the people who live on the Earth
3.Even though everyone fears the unknown secrets that the veil hides, they still have curiosity. Part of the reason they keep showing up is because Mr. Hooper is almost like a celebrity to them. They go to see him with hope that he will reveal what is hidden beneath. “His converts always regarded him with a dread peculiar to themselves, affirming, though but figuratively, that, before he brought them to celestial light, they had been with him behind the veil.” I think that they are all aware that they have their own veils, and Mr. Hooper is just the only one who is open about it and doesn’t choose to hide it. Even though the veil technically “hides” his sins, it makes them apparent as well.
Arianna Amini 1. I believe that the black veil represents the repressed emotion of Mr. Hooper. It brings out the sins and worries of all the other towns people and brings them feeling of sadness and hope. It brings out fear and guilt in anyone who looks at it and almost represents evil. Specifically Mr. Hooper's black veil represents how the whole town has spent their whole lives hiding their sins along with the guilt they feel for them. The veil is trying to teach the society that everyone has sins and it is an even bigger sin to hide them. Since Mr. Hooper is the priest wearing the black veil has a bigger impact on society. Since he is a priest is such a holy and relgious man when he wears the veil and admits to sin it means a lot more than just a regular person.
2. The earth's black veil in my opinions represents the repressed emotions and sins of the town. In this small and very religious town most the people try to cover up their sins instead of let them out in open. Everyone minds their own business and keeps there sins to themselves and focusses more on their achievements. In the bigger picture it represents how everyone in the world has sinned in their lives and it is something almost everyone does.
3. I think a lot of people come to see the veil because it it almost like a phenomenon. The word of the veil has traveled to cities all around this city and everyone knows about it. Their curiosity motivates people to come see Mr. Hooper even though it makes them feel sad and guilty. Questions like what is the veil? why is he wearing it? and where did it come from? are all questioned asked about the black veil and it's mystery is what keeps people coming back for more
1. I think that the black veil also brings out the repressed emotions in the other charectors. it is the fact that when they are near Mr. Hooper they feel dark and vulnerable, but they still come from miles away to see him. They feel that his hole personality has changed because of the black veil. “He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face” (1253) This something else is evil and they feel that it represents evil. This evil it represents has something to do with their sins and sinning itself.
2. Adding on to what I said about the Earth's black veil, it also represents that people of the earth always hide things. They hide what is bad about them and in a way it is like the earth has a black veil tucked away beneath it. This black veil has all the bad things and sins the earth has done and almost stored them away.“There is an hour to come…when all of us shall cast aside our veils” (1257). This quote represents that at one point in every persons life (usually death) their comes a time where everyone must cast away their metaphorical veils. I think it is also trying to say that one day the earth must also cast away their veil and stop hiding its sins and wrong doings.
3. I kind of mentioned this in question #1 but as I said before the mystery of the veil is what keeps people coming back for more. The unknowing of whats going to happen next and if something significant will come about of this veil makes everyone come back. Even though it makes them feel sad and brings out their sins they feel a sort of attachment to the veil. "But what if the world will not believe that it is the type of an innocent sorrow?" urged Elizabeth. "Beloved and respected as you are, there may be whispers that you hide your face under the consciousness of secret sin. For the sake of your holy office, do away this scandal!" His fiance Elizabeth says this when he first puts on the veil and it shows that he knew people would talk differently about him and not like him as much, but he still kept the veil on. I think that was another thing that people questioned. Why keep something on when it effects your personal relationships with well anyone?
1. I think that Allegra is correct when she says the blakc veil represents the fear of the townspeople. I think that the sin hidden in plain sight disturbs the citizens. They all are trying to repress their sins.
2. I think the earth is wearing a black veil because all of the people living on earth have sins they want to hide.
3. The people are very curious of what Mr. Hooper could did that he is hiding on his face. They are astonished that their own minister has sins he wants to hide.
1. I agree with both Allegra and Grigg about the black veil and how it represents the fear of the townspeople. This fear is their repressed emotion. I think that the minister puts of the veil in the first place because he wants people to realize they are all hiding their sins and they are not alone.
2. The earth's black veil might also have to do with the earth itself having sins. The earth is I guess responsible for the sins of the people and all the other creatures of earth. The earth black veil might not just have to do with the people, but also the other things of the earth that have sin.
3. I believe that people might also come to see the vewil because it is something unlike anything else. Never have people seen a minister with such dark thoughts surrounding him and I guess the word has spread about him. People might come to see him to see what all the fuss is about and what everyone is talking about.
1. We are all in agreement on what the black veil represents. Ultimately, it is their fear of the unknown that is being repressed. In this case, it is their sins. However, they also have a daily reminder of it since they see Mr. Hooper. 2. The Earth's black veil could also mean that every single person on the Earth sins, therefore the whole earth might as well be covered with one. 3. Mr. Hooper is somewhat famous for his black veil, therefore the people want to witness it themselves and experience the feelings that it brings. They gather to see it in hopes that he will happen to reveal what is beneath it while they are there.
1. I think it is interesting that Grigg brings up how it seems like Mr. Hooper is being forced to wear it because he says he must. However, I think it is a personal choice he makes because he is trying to make a point.
1. The black veil represents the repressed emotion of the minister because it shows how people judge each other just by how they look and not what's inside. He uses it to show that every person has sin in his or her life and that it is not really shown or forgiven unless it is expressed.
2. The earth's black vail is the notion of sin through out the earth and that people just kind of avoid it when possible. But the back vail is all over the earth but Mr. Hooper is the only one who actually comes out and shows it by wearing that black veil for the rest of this life to show his sin.
1. By Mr. Hooper refusing to remove the vail even on his death bed. He shows that even people who are about to die are not ridden from their previous sins. He uses his last bit of energy just to make sure the vail isn't removed while he is still alive because his sins will not be gone until after he has died.
2. In the worldly view the people around Mr. Hoopers' death bed all want to see him remove the vail in his last act because they want to see him leave the earth with all this sin unmasked but Mr. Hooper will not do it and I think this is because in his eyes the sin lasts forever and will be with you wil you die
Why does everyone still come to see the minister even though the veil gives them dread?

Grigg- 3rd analysis
ReplyDelete1. The black veil represents the repressed sins of each and every townsperson. They are reminded of this every day they see Mr. Hooper.
2. Because all the people living on earth have sins they want to hide then the entire earth might as well wear a black veil.
3. The people are so curious to see what lies beneath the veil that they are all ultimately drawn to it.
1. The black veil represents the repressed emotion of the minister because it shows how people judge each other just by how they look and not what's inside. He uses it to show that every person has sin in his or her life and that it is not really shown or forgiven unless it is expressed.
ReplyDelete2. The earth's black vail is the notion of sin through out the earth and that people just kind of avoid it when possible. But the back vail is all over the earth but Mr. Hooper is the only one who actually comes out and shows it by wearing that black veil for the rest of this life to show his sin.
